The three signs of the zodiac attributed to the element of Air - Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra.
Akasha:
The ever-present spiritual power that permeates the universe. Violet in color, it embraces the other four elements - earth, air, fire, and water
Akashic Records:
The "recordings" left in the Akasha by every event.
Advanced occultists develop the gift of retrieving past events by reading the Akashic Records.
Akasha Spirit:
The fifth element, the omnipresent spiritual power that permeates the universe.
Alchemy:
A formula-based system of that greatly relates to chemistry.

Another name for Samhain, a Pagan festival which is celebrated on the last day of October.
Altar:
A special place set aside for magical workings or religious worship (A flat surface). This can be set up just about anywhere and can be as simple as a plain board or an elaborate table that has been set aside exclusively to hold ritual tools and symbols for magic or religious observance.
Amulet:
an object that has been charged for a particular intention; such as protection, drawing money, or Love.
AN-SHET:
Another word for a Witch's magical wand.
Anaphrodisiac:
A substance, such as camphor, that reduces sexual desires.
Anima:
The buried feminine elements in a man's psyche.
Animism:
It is the belief that natural objects, and Nature itself, are alive and conscious.
Animistic:
The belief that all forms of Nature have a Divine Spirit within.
Animus:
The buried masculine elements in a woman's psyche
Ankh:
An ancient Egyptian symbol described as a cross with a loop at the top: The Egyptian symbol which represents life, love, and reincarnation.
Anointing:
Blessing or magically charging a person or object with a drop of oil.
Candles are usually anointed before their use in ritual or magical work.
Anointing Oil:
Scented oil; consecrated and charged with energy and used to anoint objects or people.
Aphorism:
A sparsely worded saying.
Aphrodisiac:
Substance that generates sexual excitement.
Apparition:
A phantom seen in a dream or trance or waking state as the result of astral projection.
Aquarius:
The 11th sign of the zodiac. It is symbolized by the Water Bearer, is an Air sign, and is ruled by Uranus.
Aradia:
Daughter of the Goddess Diana, and a name for the Goddess used by Italian witches or Strega. Believed to have been derived from the Tuscan witches' usage as recorded in C.G. Leland's Aradia
Arcana:
Means "secret or hidden knowledge" & refers to Tarot cards.
Arcane:
Refers to the two half’s of a Tarot deck; the major and the minor.
The major consists of 22 cards that depict dominant occurrences in our lives.
The Minor Arcane is made up of 56 cards that portray smaller events.
Arianrhod:
A Welsh Goddess-name much used by witches. The name means `Silver Wheel'. Caer Arianrhod (Castle of Arianrhod) symbolizes the resting-place of souls between incarnations.
Aries:
The 1st sign of the zodiac. It is symbolized by the Ram, is a Fire sign, and is ruled by Mars.
Aromatherapy:
Using flowers, herbs, oils, incense or anything else that has an aroma therapeutically.
Aspect:
Facets or different forms of a deity. Example: All goddesses are the Goddess.
The particular principle or part of the Creative Life Force being worked with or acknowledged at any one time.
Aspecting:
A magical activity when a practitioner takes on the aspect of the Goddess or God for different purposes.
Asperger:
A bundle of fresh herbs or a perforated object used to sprinkle water during or preceding ritual, for purification purposes.
Astral Body:
The spiritual counterpart of the physical body. The astral body is capable of travelling with the conscious mind while the physical body is asleep.
Astral Plane:
A plane is a level of existence. Each plane has its own laws. Humans reside in the physical plane.
A place which is generally conceptualized as an invisible parallel world which remains unseen from our own solid world of form.
Astral Projection:
Separating your astral body from your physical body.
Astral Travel:
The process of separating your astral body from your physical one to accomplish travel in the astral plane or dream time.
Astrology:
The ancient science and practice of divination by studying the Sun, Moon, planets and stars
The study of and belief in the effects the movements and placements of planets and how they affect the personality of a person, their character and future events.
Athame:
a cleansed and consecrated double bladed dagger or knife used to project energy that is used for rituals. It should never be used to cut anything in the physical world.
Attunement:
An activity which brings the mind, emotion and psyche of an individual into harmony.
Aura:
The energy field surrounding living beings and inanimate objects. This energy field reflects the composite nature of the physical form it surrounds.
Automatic Writing:
Form of divination where the channeler uses a pen, paper and an altered state of consciousness to receive messages.

One of the eight Sabbats celebrated on the first day of autumn, which is on or near September 23rd; Also known as Alban Elfed and the Second
Festival of Harvest.
Avatar:
An advanced soul, who returns to a physical body to teach less evolved souls.

Balefire/ Bel Fire:
A fire lit for magical purposes, usually outdoors. They are traditional on Yule, Beltane, and Midsummer.
A large bonfire celebration; Nine woods are traditionally placed in the traditional balefire. The Sabbat Beltane gets its name from the Balefires lit throughout Britain and Ireland on May Eve. Baile means dance.
Bane:
That which destroys life, which is poisonous, destructive, and dangerous.
A fate or fated connection that will lead inevitably to the destruction of the named person or thing.
Banish:
To send away or cast out.
To magically end something or exorcise unwanted entities.
Banishing Ritual:
A ritual used to rid oneself of unwanted feelings, thoughts, influences, or entities.
A rite used to dismiss any entities called to participate in a ceremony or magical working.
A rite used to mark off sections in a particularly long ceremony.
B.C.E. :
Before Common Era; C.E.: Synonymous with B.C. but without religious bias.
Bell:
can be used to invoke directional energies, to ring in the sunrise on a Sabbat, or to frighten away faeries and baneful spirits.
Beltane:
May Eve festival.
One of the Ancient Celtic "Fire Festivals".
The traditional Sabbat where the rule of the "Wheel of the Year" is returned to the Goddess. This Festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Maiden to Mother.

Besom:
In Wiccan practice, a broom used to cleanse an area of unwanted energies.
Bi-Location:
A type of astral projection during which you maintain awareness of your present surroundings.
Bind:
To restrain someone or something, to stop from doing harm.
To magically restrain something or someone.
Bind runes:
A powerful magical talisman, normally made from wood or metal, and inscribed with two or more different rune symbols which are combined into an aesthetically pleasing way.
Black Magic:
Magic which, either as a means of building power or as the goal, intentionally harms another being.
A magical ideology which states that the practitioner and his/her pursuit of pure knowledge and/or

Tool used for divination and dark aspect meditations.
Blessed Be:
An all- purpose phrase used for greetings and partings among Witches.
Blessing: The act of imbuing an object, person, or a place with divine energies of the elements or the God and Goddess.
Blood Magic: Ritual or working that requires the use of blood.
Blood Moon: also called the Shedding Moon or the Falling Leaf Moon; Coming right before Samhain.
Bodhisattva:
A human entity so highly developed that it no longer needs to reincarnate on Earth but chooses to do so in order to help mankind
Bolline:
In Wiccan practice, a sacred knife used for practical applications, Commonly a curved single blade, white-handled knife, used for harvesting herbs, inscribing candles, etc.
Book of Shadows:
A journal kept by witches that contain his/her collection of information on magic and religion.
The book must be hand written. Also known as a BOS.
Boomerang Effect:
A popular name for the well-known occult principle that a psychic attack which comes up against a stronger defense rebounds threefold
Bright Blessings:
A term of parting meaning "a wish of blessing from the Goddess".
British Traditional Wicca:
A Wiccan tradition based upon the works of Gerald Gardner, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic lore
the theoretical coven-oriented form of witchcraft practiced in the British isles before the coming of Gardner.
Burning Times:
refers to a historical time roughly from 1000 to 1700. During this time it is said that over 9 million people we killed and tortured because they were accused of being "witches.

Caduceus:
is the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology. It is a symbol of harmony, peace, balance and reconciliation. It can be described as a winged orb mounted on a staff intertwined by two serpents facing each other looking at the orb in the center.
Cakes and Ale:
The Wiccan practice of sharing of food and drink after magical workings or ritual. It consists of a natural beverage and cake offered to each participant as a thanksgiving and a means of grounding. This tradition is intended to create union between worshipper & deity. After the participants share their cakes and ale, they are always sure to save some as an Earth offering. They crumble the remaining cake and sprinkle it on the Earth along with the remaining ale.

Call:
To invoke or evoke.
Calling the Quarters:
Act in invoking the four cardinal directions that represent the four elements for ritualistic purposes.
Cancer:
The 4th sign in the zodiac. It is symbolized by the Crab, is a Water sign, and is ruled by the Moon.
Candle Magic:
The use of candles to preform spells or works of magic.
Candlemas:
See Imbolc
Capricorn:
The 10th sign of the zodiac. Symbolized by the Goat, is an Earth sign, and is ruled by the Saturn.
Cardinal directions:
North, South, East and West. Used in many rituals.
Casting a Circle:
The act of creating a protected circle.
Casting Cloth:
Layout cloth with appropriate markings, used for tossing the ogham fews (or for runes).
Cauldron:
A pot, usually iron, used in modern Celtic Wiccan practice as a symbol of rebirth.

Celtic Wicca
Celtic Wicca is a modern tradition of Wicca that incorporates some elements of Celtic mythology.
Censer:
A heat-proof container in which incense is burned. It is associated with the element air.
Centering:
The act of attuning the chakras, aura and self with the earth and the universe for energy.
Linking yourself with the center of your magical universe, this is also the center of your magical being, connecting yourself to the energies of the universe.
Ceremonial:
The system of rules and procedures to be observed at a formal or religious occasion.
Ceremonial Magic:
Magical practice which is ceremonial in nature and in purpose
Ceremonial Witchcraft:
Witchcraft incorporating elements of the various traditions of ceremonial magic.
Cernunnos: (Cerunnos)
The only known name of the Celtic Horned God; it is much used by witches, in the Cernunnos form.
Cerridwen:
A Welsh Goddess-name much used to represent the Mother or Crone aspects.
Chalice:
A ritual tool. - Blessed cup.
Chaplet:
A crown for the head usually made of flowers and worn at Beltane.
Channeling:
Moving your astral self aside to allow another entity complete or partial control over your body.
Charge:
To infuse with magical power. A prayer of invocation.
Charge of the Goddess:
The words of the Goddess to her children, usually spoken after the ritual of Drawing Down the Moon
Charging:
To infuse an object with personal power.
Charkas:
The seven major energy vortexes found in the human body: crown - white; third-eye - purple; throat - blue; chest - pink or green; navel - yellow; abdomen - orange; groin - red. Smaller vortexes are located in the hands and feet as well.
Charm:
An object that is charged for a specific task.
Circle:
Sacred space wherein magic is worked and ritual contained. It holds ritual energy inside until the witch is ready to release it, and provides protection for the witch.
Clairaudience:
Tto receive messages from the spirit world.
Clairvoyance:
can receive impressions or images of a psychic nature.
Clan:
A group of covens who follow the same practices.
Clair:
"Clear" Usually abilities that come from psychic mental abilities.
Clairempathy:
Clear emotion; able to feel the emotions of others or other entities.
Clairgustance:
Clear taste: able to taste things that aren't actually in one's mouth.
Clairscent: Clear Smell; able to smell fragrances.
Clairsenteince: able to feel things on the skin, or ability to touch things and get psychic impressions
Cleansing:
removing negative energy, vibrations, or images from a person, object, or place.
Collective Consciousness: The subconscious energetic network that connects the souls of all human beings.
Collective Unconsciousness: the connection of all living things, past and present.
Coming of Age Ritual:
This is the age when pagan children they are permitted membership in covens. usually this is around 13 for boys,
and at the time of a girl's first menstrual cycle

Cone of Power is an energy form raised within a ritual or magic circle to achieve a specific goal.
CONJURATION:
The act of evoking spirits by means of formulas or words of power.
Conscious Mind:

Trickster energies, applies to one who constantly jokes and clowns.
Craft:
Modern term used in place of or referring to the practice of Wicca and Witchcraft
Craft Name:
Magical name used by Wiccans and Witches used in ritual or magical. Many Witches prefer to keep their Craft name a secret and only use it within the Circle
Crone:
Aspect of the Goddess represented by the old woman.
Cross-Quarter Days:
Refers to Sabbats not falling on the solstices or equinoxes.
Crystal Ball:
A sphere used for scrying purposes.

Dark Moon:
Representative of the Goddess as the One Who Transforms in her aspect of Tomb and Womb.
Dark Power:

Dedication:
A ritual in which a person vows to study and learn their new path.
Deflection: Defuse general malevolence and ill will of others.
Degree:
The rank or level of a Wiccan individual.
Deity:
A God or Goddess.
Desoil: clockwise movement.
Dianic Witchcraft:
Neo-Pagan traditions whose main focus is the Goddess figure.
Dirk:
Ritual knife of the Scottish tradition.
Divination:
Seeing the future; Crystal ball, Tarot cards, tea leaves, etc…
*The magical art of using tools and symbols to gather information from the Collective Unconsciousness.
Divine Power:
The un-manifested, pure energy that exists within the Goddess and God; The life force, the ultimate source of all things.
Dowsing:
Using a pendulum or stick (Dowsing Rods) to find the location of a person, place, or object.
This technique can also be used to answer yes or no questions.
Dragon's Blood:
The resin from the palm tree 'Daemonorops Draco', used by Witches as magical incense for various enchantments.
Drawing down the Moon:
A ritual preformed during the full moon in which energy and the essence of the lunar Goddess are drawn into the witch's body.
Drawing Down the Sun:
Lesser-known and lesser-used companion ritual to Drawing down the Moon in which the essence of the Sun God is drawn into the body of a male witch.
Dressing:
Putting oil on spell items such as candles as part of a ritual consecration to prepare the object to attract and direct the energy of a spell to accomplish a goal
Dryad:
In Greek lore, a wood nymph or spirit of the woods.
Duality:
The opposite of polarity. When used as a religious term, it separates two opposites such as good and evil and places those characteristics into two completely separate God-forms.
Earth:
One of the four elements which corresponds to the North Watchtower or the magical circle.
Earth Magic:
*A form of magic where the powers and energies of Mother Earth are used in workings and rituals.
*The energy that exists within stones, herbs, flames, wind, and other natural objects.
Earth Power:
The power and energies of the earth and nature.
Earth Signs:
The three signs of the zodiac attributed to the element of Earth - Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo.
Earthing:
To send excess energy into the Earth
Earthly Plane:
Metaphor for your normal waking consciousness, or for the everyday, solid world we live in
Eclectic Witch:
A group or solitary practitioner that a blend of beliefs and practices from several different traditions and teaching.
Ego:
Conscious part of the human psyche.
Elder:
*W itches and Wiccans: third-degree and second-degree members of a coven.
*Individuals experienced in the beliefs and workings of a group, who oversee the procedures of their church or coven.
Elemental Symbols: are those that represent the five points on the Pentagram: Water, Fire, Earth and Air, The top point or fifth element is that of Spirit or Self.
Elemental System:
Any system which attempts to explain all matter as a mixture of basic component parts.
Elementals:
*The personification of the nature elements of Air, Earth, Fire and Water. The fifth element is Spirit which brings the other elements together. These Elementals are traditionally also the "Guardians of the Watchtowers" to the North, East, South and West.
*Archetypical spirit beings associated with one of the four elements. Elementals are sometimes called Faeries.
*A supernatural entity or force thought to be physically manifested by occult means
Elements:
The four elements of nature; Earth, Air, Fire, Water; The building blocks of the universe. Everything that exists contains one or more of these energies. The fifth element is- spirit or Akasha.
Eleven:
Secretive tradition of the craft which works closely with elemental beings.
Elixir:
Elixirs are made by placing charged crystals in liquids and allowing the energy to flow to that liquid for a time.

Energy:

Eostre's Eggs:
Colored, decorated eggs of Ostara; named for the Teutonic Goddess Eostre.
Equinox:
The two times each year when the sun crosses the equator and day and night are everywhere of equal length.
Esbat:
An Esbat is a Wiccan ritual or celebration for the new or full moon. The word actually means "to joyfully celebrate".
Etheric Body:
That part of the body which exists in the Etheric plane between Astral and Physical.
Etheric Plane:
The level of energy existence between the physical and astral planes.
Evil Eye:
Negative energy transmitted by a look, glance or stare.
Eye Of Horus:
An ancient Egyptian symbol which depicts the divine eye of the God Horus, representing both the solar and lunar energies.
Evocation:
To evoke a deity or being is to call upon it and ask it to join you during ritual or a working.
This is not to be confused with Invocation; the words are similar but are not interchangeable!
Faerie/Fairy:
*A small being, human in form, playful and having magical powers.
*Beings that live in the Otherworld or Underworld, parallel to our world and not far from it.
*Also referred to as; faery, faerie, fay, fae; euphemistically wee folk, good folk, people of peace, fair folk, etc.
Faerie Burgh:
Mound of earth which covers a faerie colony's underground home.
Fairyland:
The enchanted realm of fairies
Familiar:
Wiccans and Pagans have an animal companion that they consider their familiar; a cat, dog, or whatever they have an emotional and psychic bond with, an animal that is tuned into the powers of its human partner. Familiars can also be entities that dwell on the astral plane.
In shamanistic practices, the animal familiar is not a physical being at all, but a thought-form or spiritual entity. It often travels astrally, or serves as a magical guardian against those who might try to psychically attack the shaman.
Fascination:
A mental effort to control another animal or person's mind; Also known as "mind-bending".
Often considered unethical.
Father:
The middle phase of the God; Middle Aged man, Protection, nurturing, strength.
Festival:
One of the eight seasonal Sabbats.
Fetish:
A symbolic material object believed to possess the power to protect or ward off evil.
Fire:
One of the four elements; Corresponds to the South Watchtower.
Fire Signs:
The three signs of the zodiac attributed to Fire - Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Fivefold Kiss:
Witches salute. It comprises of kisses on various parts of the body and is only used within the circle.
Fold Magic:
An eclectic collection of herbalism, faith healing, curses and hexes, candle magic, etc. that has thrived in rural areas that still practice old religions, or forms of them.
Folk Magic:
The Practice of projecting personal power, as well as the energies within natural objects such as herbs, and crystals, to bring about needed changes.
Folklore:
Traditional sayings, cures, faerie tales, and folk wisdom of a particular locale which is separate from their mythology.
Four Elements:
Earth, Air, Fire & Water.
Ancient teachings say that creation was brought about when the four elements came together under the direction of the divine spirit.
Four Quarters:
North, South, East & West.
In Wicca, these are sacred directions that each has their own color associations and each is represented by one of the four elements.
Full Moon:
A moon phase in which the full face of the moon is visible.
Full Moon Meeting:
A gathering on the night of the full moon that is related to moon worship, also known as an Esbat.
Gaea/Gaia:
Mother Earth.
Gardnerian Wicca:
A denomination of Wicca founded by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s
Gemini:
The third sign of the zodiac. Symbolized by the Twins, is an Air sign, and is ruled by Mercury.
Glyph:
A powerful magical symbol representing the name and date of birth of a person.
God:
*Masculine aspect of deity.
*In Christianity and other monotheistic religions: The creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority.
*lord - deity - divinity - godhead - idol
Goddess:
*Feminine aspect of deity.
* The supreme female aspect of the Divine and consort of the Horned God.
*In some cultures goddesses are associated with Earth, motherhood, love, and the household. In other cultures, goddesses also rule over war, death, and destruction as well as healing.
*In some religious traditions or movements Heavenly Mother is the wife and feminine counterpart of God the Father.
God and Goddess:
The Divine Totality personified into masculine and feminine aspects.
*The Goddess is known as the Great Earth Mother and is symbolized by the moon. The Goddess is seen in three different aspects: maiden, mother & crone.
*The God is known as the father figure and is symbolized by the sun. His three aspects include the hooded one, the horned one, and the old one.
Gnome:
* An earth Spirit.
* In Greek lore, an earth elemental holding secrets of metallurgy and of the treasures of the Earth. Usually appearing in the form of a short, squat humanoid with a gnarled, leathery skin.
Golden Dawn:
A magical order which began in the late 19th century dedicated to Hermetic Magic.
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Grail:
The symbol of spiritual transformation & purification.
It is symbolic of the Goddess and feminine polarity.
Grain Dolly:
Figure usually woven at Imbolc from dried sheaves of grain collected at the previous harvest.
The dolly is traditionally burned at Yule and a new one made the following Imbolc.
Great Mother:
The womb of nature and the gateway from the other world. All Goddesses are contained within her and both life and death are children of her womb. She can be seen in one of her three aspects: maiden, mother or crone, and is associated with the moon, fertility & the Earth.
Great Rite:
*Sexual union, actual or symbolic, usually part of a third degree initiation ceremony or as part of Sabbat rituals in many traditions.
*In the symbolic Great Rite, this union may be symbolized by lowering a ritual Athame or sword into the chalice, or grail.
* It symbolizes the primal act of creation from which all life comes.
Green Magic:
Magic that is focused on the Earth, where the practitioner adapts their self to the needs of nature, then does their best to fulfill those needs.
Green Man:
*Another name for the God.
*Is the god of vegetation and plant life. He symbolizes the life that is found in the natural plant world, and in the earth itself. The Green Man embodies the spirit of the fertile forest.
GREEN WITCH:
A nickname for a Witch who is skilled in the art of herbs.
Grimoire:
*A book of ceremonies, rituals and spells. It is often a part of or used interchangeably with the Book of Shadows.
*A magical workbook containing ritual information, formulae, magical properties of natural objects and preparation of ritual equipment
Grounding:
*Making a connection to any element (but esp. Earth) through which energy may be taken or given.
*The process of centering one's self in the physical world both before and after any ritual or astral experience.
Green Man:
God of the Wicca is the Horned God, the ancient God of Fertility: the God of forest also of the hunt.
Grove:
Synonymous with coven.
Guardians:
The Beings that protect the four corners (the elements).
The Four Quarters are the guardians of the Magic Circle, and are welcomed into your sacred space to protect, bless and witness your workings.
Hand Fasting:
A pagan marriage ceremony.
Handparting:

Hiving Off:
This term is used for a small coven which splits off from a larger one. Sometimes this is done to keep the gatherings of a manageable size, other times covens split over philosophical differences.
Holly King:
The symbol of waning forces of nature. He rules from midsummer to midwinter (the time of nature's decline into fall & winter). At the winter solstice he is defeated by the Oak King who then claims the season.
Holy Water:
Or blessed water; water that has been blessed and purified for magical purposes.
There are many different ways to make Blessed water; the most common method is sea salt and spring water.

One of the most prevalent God-images in Paganism.

Imbog is associated with the fire Goddess Brigid and celebrates the approach of spring and the promise of renewal.

*five-pointed, inverted (upside down) star. The five points correspond to the elements, to include Spirit at the bottom to represent the power of the elements over Spirit.

Invocation:
Invoking is a form of voluntary possession. When you invoke a deity or being, you are inviting it to come into you, and that god or goddess will manifest through a human host. An example of invocation of a deity is the ritual of Drawing down the Moon.

Shamanism:

Used in magical workings. Magically oriented seal or signet used in a magical workings.

* Wiccan principle that says anything you do comes back on you three times as powerful.
* Karmic principle that the energy released is returned three times over, in the same or a future life.

are the four elemental "directions" or "quarters" called to protect the Circle during its establishment.
Water:
Element corresponding to the West, associated with the colors light green, medium blue, and silver.
The spirits of Water are known as Undines.
Water Signs:
The three signs of the zodiac attributed to Water - Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio.
Waxing Moon:

The Sabbat celebrating the rebirth of the God.

A log ritually burned at Yule to mark the death of winter and the birth of the sun.
Zodiac:
An invisible circular band in the sky through which the planets are seen to move. Divided into 12 sections called zodiac signs
