The Moon
The Moon has always been perceived as female, the stages of her life cycle parallel to our own: "Maiden", "Mother" and "Crone".
The Maiden reigns over the aspect of childhood, new beginnings, spring, new starts and the first menstruation of a girl.
The Mother represents maturity and motherhood, the harvest, summer, bounty and strength.
The crone presides over; endings, old age, wisdom, justice and retribution and Magical mysteries.
We draw on her power for lunar magic, synchronizing our spells with her cycles. The Moon is the closest astronomical body to the earth and as such she has a profound influence on us. Her highest energy occurs at the time of the Full Moon.
The full moon is the most powerful time for your magical workings.
The next most powerful time is the time of the New Moon. The new moon is used for personal growth, healing, etc.
Between the New Moon and Full Moon is the phase called Waxing Moon. Magic for this phase includes attraction, growth, and gain.
Between the Full Moon and New Moon is the phase called the waning moon. Magic for this phase includes banishing magic, such a losing negative emotions, bad habits etc.
Three days before the New Moon is known as the Dark Moon, as it is not visible in the sky. Traditionally, no magic is performed at this time. It is a time for rest.
Just as the sun does, the moon also travels through the different astrological signs, only quicker. When the moon resides within the various signs, that sign influences the magical aspect of the moon.

Moon Phases
New Moon:
The moon itself rises in the morning and travels the sky by day invisible to the eye. On these darkest of nights with nothing to distract the mind anything is possible. The new moon is for starting something new , new beginnings. It is the darkest night of the month, bursting with possibilities; this is the time when the promise of your deepest desires lies close to the earth. New Moon workings can be done from the day of the new moon to three-and-a-half days after. The new moon is for starting new beginnings Such as love and romance, health or job hunting.
Waxing Moon Magic:
As the moon begins her journey appearing at first as a sliver and maturing nightly, symbolizing growth as she travels across the night sky, this is the time of the Waxing Moon. It occurs seven to fourteen days after the new moon. The waxing moon is for constructive magic such as; friendship, love, success, wealth, luck and health. Candles poured during this time pulsate with the energy of growth, hope, rejuvenation, and light and so we do work during this time that will help to manifest our dreams.
Waxing Half Moon:
A time of suspension, with light & dark united equally. Candles poured during this time are excellent for balance and symmetry, stability, and endurance.
Full Moon:
Fully illuminated, smiling down upon the earth so that we may plainly see our way. The Moon pulls on us, she calls upon our desires, emotions, thoughts and feelings bringing our truest desires to the front of our minds. This is the time from fourteen days to seventeen and a half days after the new moon. It is th e prime time for any workings that need that extra power, for example; healing a serious condition, Love, Dreams, Learning, and Money. Candles poured during the Full Moon virtually vibrate with this great energy.
Waning Moon :
From three and a half to ten and a half days after the full moon comes the time of the Waning Moon. This is the time of diminishing; the waning moon is used for banishing, for getting rid of the negativity in your life. Waning poured candles radiate with the knowledge and acceptance of the fact that all things at some point must simply fade away. These candles should be used for the release, banishment, or casting out such things as addictions, illness or negativity.
Waning Half Moon:
Now comes the half-moon again, this time during the waning phase of the moon, the opposite of the time of increase. Another time of intermission, with the light and dark united in harmony. Candles poured during this time are excellent for balance and symmetry, stability, and endurance.
Dark Moon Magic:
Occurring from ten and a half to fourteen days after the full moon, the dark moon is a time for ridding or casting out. Such as getting rid of bad habits or Binding spells. This is also a good time for bringing justice to bear.
A few facts you might like to know
Due to the rotation of the earth, the Wiccan calendar contains 13 Full Moons,
which means a full moon happens every 28 1/4 days.
The New Moon always rises at sunrise.
The first quarter at noon.
The Full Moon always rises at sunset.
And the last quarter at midnight.
Moonrise takes place about 50 minutes later each day than the day before. The new moon can not be seen because the illuminated side faces away from the earth. This occurs when the Moon lines up between the Earth and the Sun.
A full moon by any other name would still shine as bright...

Drawing down the Moon
Drawing or Calling down the moon, means that a Witch calls down the power of the moon and the presence of the Goddess. There are many variations of Drawing down the moon all over the internet, there is no one right or wrong way. My best advice is to do a little research and use the one that calls to you personally. You may even want to consider making up your own or adapting one you find during your research. Regardless of how you choose to do it, the ritual of Drawing Down the Moon is best performed on the night of the full moon, but can be practiced at any time of the month or phase of the moon if you feel you need to do so, and while it’s more suitable to be performed outside, you can hold the ritual indoors. Regardless of how or where, the act of Drawing or Calling down the Moon is a way for you to feel completely connected. The ritual is designed to draw power and can result in an extra jolt of power or energy in your workings. This heightened state may last for several days so do not be alarmed if you feel differently for a few days after.
